Open up my chakras - why or how the hell do I do that?
Open up my chakras - why or how the hell do I do that?

Swirling cone shaped vortexes with tips pointing to a main vertical power current. That’s what a chakra is…swirling wheels of energy that correspond to massive nerve centres and major organs relating to our physical, emotional and spiritual well being. Since our bodies are energy and energy is constantly moving it is essential that our chakras stay open, aligned and fluid. If there is a blockage, energy can’t flow. Think of something as simple as a bathtub drain. If you allow too much hair to go into the drain, the bathtub will back up with water, stagnate and will eventually grow mould and bacteria. So it is too with our bodies and the chakras.

Let’s look into chakras a little more to understand what each one does…

  • 1st chakra – root chakra is associated with automatic physical functioning of the body, our basic needs and security and affects pain and pleasure – relates to the adrenals, kidneys and spinal column
  • 2nd chakra – sacral chakra is associated with the emotional aspect of our lives, our creativity and is our sexual centre – relates to the reproductive system and the gonads
  • 3rd chakra – solar plexus is the source of our personal power and is associated with our mental life and our linear thinking – relates to the stomach, liver, gall bladder and nervous system and the pancreas
  • 4th chakra – heart chakra is our source of love and connection and unites the lower and upper chakras – relates to the heart, blood, vagas nerve and circulatory system and the thymus gland
  • 5th chakra – throat chakra is associated with the power of the word, speaking things into being, listening and taking responsibility for our actions – relates to the bronchial and vocal apparatus, lungs and alimentary canal and the thyroid
  • 6th chakra – brow chakra is our centre for intuition. We all have a sense of intuition but we may not listen to it or its warnings – relates to the lower brain, left eye, ears, nose and nervous system and the pituitary gland
  • 7th chakra – crown chakra is associated with the higher mind, knowing and integration of our spiritual and physical connection – relates to the upper brain, right eye and pineal gland

By understanding which energy system relates to thoughts, emotions, memories and sensations we are able understand how our physical symptoms relate to disease and illness. Our bodies are in constant flux between balance and imbalance. Unless you have an apparent problem on one area of the body, imbalances can be difficult to detect. Bringing awareness to you body and mind helps to pick up the signals and clues.

For example, frequent constipation can indicate a blockage in the first chakra – root chakra. A recurring sore throat leaves clues to a blocked fifth chakra – throat chakra. Frequent headaches around the area of the forehead may mean your sixth chakra – brow chakra is blocked.

With this awareness of how a blocked chakra can create stresses and disease in our bodies, we can understand how it makes good sense to do exercises to open up our chakras just like we do exercise to keep our physical body fit and healthy.

Exercises to open and charge chakras

as recommended by Barbara Ann Brennan in Hands of Light

Root chakra – red

Stand with feet wide apart and toes and knees pointed out on an angle. Bend your knees as deeply as you can . It would be great if you can get your butt as low as your knees. Move up and down several times with your breath. Now add a swing motion to your pelvis. Push your pelvis as far forward and back as you can. Emphasise the forward movement. Rock back and forth three times as you go down. Stay at your lowest point with your knees bent and rock back and forth three times. Then rock back and forth 3 times on the way up. The most important part of this exercise is the rocking back and forth with your knees deeply bent. Repeat the entire exercise at least 3 times.

Use your breath on each movement. Breath in red and breath out red. Try an visualise the red spinning in a clockwise direction (if looking at you). If the red you visualise on your in breath or out breath is lighter or muddy then you need to balance this chakra. If it is lighter then you need more red. If it is muddy then you need to clean the chakra. Repeat until the red is bright.

Sit on the floor on your heels. Place your hands on you thighs. Flex spine forward in the pelvic area with an inhale and backward with an exhale. Repeat several times.

Sacral chakra – red-orange

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and parallel, Now rock your pelvis back and forth bending your knees slightly, Repeat several times.

Now slowly circle your hips in a full rotation with your hands on your hips. Make sure you keep the circle even.

Use your breath on each movement. Breath in red-orange and breath out red-orange. Try an visualise the red spinning in a clockwise direction (if looking at you). If the red-orange you visualise on your in breath or out breath is lighter or muddy then you need to balance this chakra. If it is lighter then you need more red-orange. If it is muddy then you need to clean the chakra. Repeat until the red-orange is bright.

Sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Grab your ankles with both hands and inhale deeply. Flex the spine forward and lift the chest, rotate the top of the pelvis back. On the exhale flex the spine backwards (curve your back) and the pelvis towards your sit bones. Repeat several times.

Lying on your back prop yourself up on your elbows. Raise both legs about one foot above the floor. Open your legs and breath in, As you breath out cross your legs at your knees while keeping your legs straight. Repeat several times. Slightly raise your legs and repeat again several times. Do this until you are about 70 cms above the ground. Then lower them using the same method. Rest. Repeat several times.

Solar plexus chakra – yellow

Jumping. You may want the support of a partner to hold their hands while you do this exercise. Jump up and down and bring your knees up as high as possible into your chest when you jump. Jump continuously for several minutes. Rest. Do not bend over to rest.

Use your breath on each movement. Breath in yellow and breath out yellow. Try an visualise the yellow spinning in a clockwise direction (if looking at you). If the red you visualise on your in breath or out breath is lighter or muddy then you need to balance this chakra. If it is lighter then you need more yellow. If it is muddy then you need to clean the chakra. Repeat until the yellow is bright.

Sit with your legs crossed, grasp your shoulders with your fingers in front and your thumbs back. Inhale and twist to the left, exhale and twist to the right. Make sure your breath is long and deep. Make sure your spine is straight. Repeat several times and then reverse the exercise and then repeat on your knees several times.

Lie on your back with your legs together and raise your heels 20cms off the ground. Look at your toes and point to your toes with your fingertips while keeping your arms straight. In this position pant breath through your nose to the count of 30. Relax and rest for the count of 30. Repeat several times.

Heart chakra – green

Get on your knees and put your arms above your head your hands touch the floor but your elbows don’t. Vary the angle of your buttocks and legs so that you can feel pressure between your shoulder blades. When you feel that push your whole body forward for a while then pull back. You can do this from the hips and legs. This works for the back of the heart chakra.

For the front of the heart chakra find something large and round that you can lean backwards on like ball or soft couch arm or barrel. Lean backwards over it with your feet firmly planted. Relax and let your chest muscles stretch out.

Use your breath on each movement. Breath in green and breath out green. Try an visualise the green spinning in a clockwise direction (if looking at you). If the red you visualise on your in breath or out breath is lighter or muddy then you need to balance this chakra. If it is lighter then you need more green. If it is muddy then you need to clean the chakra. Repeat until the green is bright.

Sitting up with your legs crossed, lock your fingers in a bear grip in your heart centre with your elbows pointing outwards. Move the elbows in a see saw motion. Breath long and deeply with this motion. Continue several times and inhale, exhale and pull on your grip. Relax for one minute. Repeat while sitting on your heels. This raises the energy higher. Be sure to tuck in your pelvis.

Throat chakra – blue

Head and neck rolls. Love your head several times in the following directions. Facing forward, up and down, side to side. Reverse. All the way up to the right, all the way down to the left. Now roll your neck and head all the way around several times in both directions.

The throat chakra also responds well to sound. So sing or make any noise you want.

Use your breath on each movement. Breath in blue and breath out blue. Try an visualise the blue spinning in a clockwise direction (if looking at you). If the red you visualise on your in breath or out breath is lighter or muddy then you need to balance this chakra. If it is lighter then you need more blue. If it is muddy then you need to clean the chakra. Repeat until the blue is bright.

Sit with your legs crossed, grasp your knees firmly. Keep your elbows straight. Begin to flex the upper spine. Inhale while moving forward. Exhale while moving back. Repeat several times. Rest.

Flex the spine by shrugging the shoulders up on inhale and down on exhale. Repeat several times. Inhale and hold for 15 seconds with your shoulders pressed up. Relax.

Repeat the exercise while sitting on your heels.

Brow chakra – violet

Repeat as per the throat chakra but with the eyes only.

Use your breath on each movement. Breath in violet and breath out violet. Try an visualise the violet spinning in a clockwise direction (if looking at you). If the violet you visualise on your in breath or out breath is lighter or muddy then you need to balance this chakra. If it is lighter then you need more violet. If it is muddy then you need to clean the chakra. Repeat until the violet is bright.

Sit with your legs crossed and lock you fingers in a bear grip at throat level. Inhale and hold your breath, then squeeze your abdomen and sphincters and push energy upwards like pushing toothpaste out of a tube. Exhale the energy out the top of your head, as you raise your arms above you head while still holding the bear grip. Repeat.

Repeat while sitting on your heels.

Crown chakra – white

Rub the crown of your head in a clockwise direction with your right hand.

Use your breath on each movement. Breath in white and breath out white. Try an visualise the yellow spinning in a clockwise direction (if looking at you). Feel the white light pulsating up out of your head as you breath in and pulsating down and you breath out. If the white you visualise on your in breath or out breath is lighter or muddy then you need to balance this chakra. If it is lighter then you need more white. If it is muddy then you need to clean the chakra. Repeat until the white is bright.

Sit with crossed legs and arms stretched over your head. Interlock your fingers except for the 2 index fingers which point straight up. Take an inbreath by pulling the navel point in, saying “sat.” Let the breath out saying “nam” while relaxing the navel point. Repeat in rapid breaths for several minutes. Then inhale and squeeze the energy from the base of the spine to the top of the head by squeezing and holding the sphincter muscles first, and then the stomach muscles. Hold your breath. Then let it out maintaining all muscle contractions. Relax. Rest. Repeat while sitting on heels. Repeat without the mantra and instead use fast pant breaths through the nose.

Sit with the legs crossed. Hold arms up at a 60 degrees angle with the wrist and elbows straight, palms facing up. Pant breath through the nose, with a rasping breath against the upper back part of the throat for about one minute. Inhale, hold the breath an pump the abdomen in and out 16 times. Exhale, relax. Repeat 2 or 3 times.

Visualise your chakras

Integrate your chakras by visualising them all. Visualise all the colours of your chakras in their approriate locations on your body swirling in a clockwise direction.
